The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced a series of student-friendly changes for the NEET UG 2026 examination. The updates are aimed at making the examination process more comfortable, organised, and convenient for candidates while maintaining the fairness and security of India's largest medical entrance examination.
The decision comes after years of feedback from students who have appeared for NEET and shared their experiences regarding examination procedures, time management, and question booklet design. With lakhs of students expected to appear for NEET UG 2026, these changes are expected to improve the overall examination experience.
One of the most important updates is the extension of the examination duration. NEET UG 2026 will now be conducted from 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM, giving candidates a total examination window of 195 minutes.
According to NTA, the additional time takes into account the mandatory examination procedures that are conducted inside the examination hall. These include attendance verification, signature formalities, and other invigilation-related activities. Earlier, many students felt that these procedures reduced the effective time available for solving the paper.
With the revised schedule, candidates will be able to utilise the intended examination time more effectively without feeling rushed.
To help candidates with calculations and problem-solving, NTA has increased the number of rough-work pages provided in the question booklet.
Previously, students were given only two rough-work pages. Under the new arrangement, candidates will receive four rough-work pages, providing additional space for calculations, diagrams, formulas, and other workings during the examination.
This change is likely to benefit students attempting numerical questions, especially in subjects such as Physics and Chemistry, where rough calculations play an important role.
Another key change introduced by NTA is the redesign of the question booklet.
Earlier, all rough-work pages were placed at the end of the booklet. While this arrangement worked for many candidates, feedback suggested that it was not equally convenient for everyone. Some students, particularly left-handed candidates, found it difficult to frequently turn pages while solving questions.
To address this concern, NTA has redesigned the booklet layout. Under the new format, two rough-work pages will be available immediately after the instruction page at the beginning of the booklet, while the remaining two pages will be placed at the end.
This arrangement gives students greater flexibility to use the pages that are most comfortable and accessible for them during the examination.
Students preparing for NEET UG 2026 should stay updated with all official notifications released by NTA. Candidates are advised to carefully read the Information Bulletin and Admit Card instructions once they become available.
Understanding the revised examination pattern, time schedule, and booklet structure in advance can help students feel more confident and prepared on exam day.
