Amid tragic suicide, NMC holds urgent meeting on campus safety

New Delhi, 13th October: Following the tragic suicide of a 27-year-old female postgraduate medical student, the National Medical Commission conducted an emergency meeting to address the issue of campus safety. 

Dr. Yogender Malik, a member of the Ethics and Medical Registration Board and Head of the Media Division, emphasized the National Medical Commission's unwavering commitment to maintaining a zero-tolerance policy against ragging and sexual harassment. He further explained that through improved decision-making processes and the involvement of external agencies, the goal is to establish an environment in which students can concentrate on their education without fear or intimidation.

The meeting was called in immediate reaction to the tragic suicide of the mentioned 27-year-old female postgraduate medical student. The victim had documented instances of purported sexual harassment, physical and psychological mistreatment, and the presence of a harmful environment fostered by her professors and senior colleagues in the Anesthesia department.

In a proactive stance to create a secure and supportive atmosphere within medical colleges, the commission has committed to conducting a comprehensive investigation to ensure justice for the victim. Furthermore, it has issued clear directives to medical colleges to take strict actions against any form of harassment or sexual harassment within the medical student’s community.

Key Measures Addressed During the Meeting:

  • The concerned college has been instructed to provide a detailed report on the incident by Thursday. Subsequently, a formal investigation into the alleged sexual harassment will be initiated.
  • A formal letter will be sent to the State Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) to initiate an independent inquiry. The DMER is mandated to complete and submit its report within 15 days.
  • No further actions or decisions regarding the medical college in question will proceed until the Anti-ragging Committee of the National Medical Commission completes its investigation into the incident.
